A Replacement For Compact Disc?
New Technologies Unveiled in Genoa and London

TECHNICS SHOW MPEG FLASH CARD AND DVD-AUDIO

Technologies that could replace Compact Disc were shown by Technics, the audio wing of Matsushita Electric at an editors conference in Genoa, Italy, earlier this year.

A prototype FLASH-RAM card player using MPEG compression was demonstrated. Unlike CD there are no moving parts, just FLASH RAM storage resembling a credit card.

It was suggested that in future, audio could be downloaded to the card in record stores, or from automatic kiosks placed in the street.

Also shown was a prototype DVD-A (DVD-Audio) player. The standard for DVD-A has recently been set by WG-4 of the DVD Forum. It will feature 96kHz sampling with 24 bit resolution and technology developed by Meridian Audio of the UK.

Technics says it hopes to have the first DVD-A players on the market by the Spring of 1999.

The new technology was shown support by software producer Warner Music. CEO AL McPherson said that consumers would purchase DVD-A for the "Added-value multi-channel, interactive and video content" as well as the enhanced audio quality.
